Jan 4th - First Day of the New Congress - The Senate follows a well-established routine on the opening day of a new Congress. The proceedings include swearing in Senators elected or reelected in the most recent general election (approximately one-third of the Senate) or newly appointed to the convening Senate.
Jan 5th - Georgia Senate Race Runoff - When will election winners be sworn in? The winners will be sworn in once results are certified. Georgia law states that results "shall be certified by the superintendent not later than 5:00 P.M. on the second Friday following the date on which such election was held. Georgia runoff timing means Perdue won't be in Congress for joint session on Electoral College; Sen. Loeffler will be there. 51R-49D but VP Pence will still be presiding.
